An apartment move in Melbourne, Palm Bay, or nearby Brevard County communities can require coordination with two properties as well as your moving crew. Elevator reservations, parking, gate access, and key handoff times can affect the day even when the drive is short.
Use this apartment-specific checklist alongside our room-by-room local moving checklist.
1. Ask both properties about moving requirements
Contact management before choosing an arrival window. Ask about permitted moving hours, weekend restrictions, loading areas, elevator bookings, and any documentation they require from the mover. Requirements vary by property, so confirm directly rather than relying on another resident’s experience.
Share any insurance-document request with the moving office early. Tell us the property’s submission instructions and deadline so the request can be reviewed.
2. Confirm the truck position and walking route
Ask where a moving truck may legally park and whether a loading space can be reserved. Do not assume a truck can block a fire lane, accessible space, sidewalk, or entrance. Photograph the route from the proposed truck position to your apartment.
Tell the mover about steps, curbs, narrow corridors, ramps, low clearances, and the distance from the elevator to your door. Include the destination route too. A ground-floor apartment can still have a long carry.
3. Coordinate elevators and building access
- Reserve the elevator or service lift if required.
- Ask who installs any required elevator protection.
- Confirm whether the reservation is exclusive or shared.
- Arrange gate codes, keys, fobs, and an on-site contact.
- Tell us the start and end of any allowed moving window.
A reservation does not eliminate every delay. Keep the property manager’s contact information available if an elevator or loading area is unavailable.
4. Review furniture fit before moving day
Measure large sofas, headboards, dining pieces, and other awkward items. Share tight doorway, stairway, and elevator dimensions when possible. Let the crew review the route and any disassembly needs before committing to a handling plan.
Discuss pianos, safes, and other specialty items separately. Check whether your lease restricts wall fixtures or requires professional appliance handling.
5. Pack for the carrying route
Close and label boxes, use manageable sizes, and keep hallways clear. Small cartons work better for dense contents such as books. Set aside medication, documents, keys, valuables, and first-night essentials to travel with you.
Empty dresser drawers unless the crew approves leaving a small amount of lightweight clothing. Furniture weight and construction matter, especially on stairs. Confirm any packing help before the appointment.
6. Match the move to your key handoff
Confirm when you can enter the new apartment and when you must leave the old one. If those times do not line up, discuss the gap with the moving office in advance. Ask the property about move-out inspection and cleaning requirements so you can plan them around loading.
If you rent the truck or container, confirm equipment delivery and access before scheduling loading or unloading labor.
7. Walk through both apartments
At pickup, show the crew what moves, what stays, and any existing damage you want noted. Before leaving, check closets, cabinets, balconies, and storage spaces. At delivery, use room labels and a furniture plan, then complete a final walk-through and raise concerns promptly.
Keep pets and children away from active work routes and leave clear access for residents throughout the move.
