A local move in Palm Bay, Melbourne, Viera, Rockledge or another Brevard County community needs a plan for the work at both addresses. The drive is one part of the job; packing readiness, building access, furniture preparation and unloading decisions also affect the day. Use this checklist to prepare the details your moving crew needs.

Need a truck and crew? Explore our local moving services in Brevard County. If you have your own truck or container, see our loading and unloading labor.

1. Start with a room-by-room inventory

List the furniture, boxes and specialty items that are actually going. Include garages, closets, patios and storage units, and mark what stays behind. Photos help show dimensions, access and condition; a written list helps explain quantities and priorities.

  • Identify heavy, oversized or fragile items such as pianos, safes, glass tops, adjustable beds and large TVs.
  • Show the route out: stairs, tight turns, narrow doors, elevators and the distance to a practical truck position.
  • Include every stop and both addresses. Describe access at the destination as carefully as access at pickup.
  • Tell your mover when the inventory changes. Adding a garage or another pickup can change the crew, vehicle and time required.

2. Confirm the estimate and the service you are buying

Before booking, review the written estimate and agreement. Ask how labor, minimum time, travel, materials, additional stops and any agreed services are charged. Florida’s consumer guidance explains the information to review in an estimate and contract; use the FDACS moving guide as a reference.

Ask which furniture preparation, packing, unpacking and reassembly tasks are included. Discuss delicate or high-value items and the applicable protection terms. Keep a copy of the agreed scope, arrival window and payment instructions accessible on your phone.

3. Arrange access at both addresses

A nearby destination can still involve substantial carrying time. A reserved elevator, a clear route and a confirmed truck position make the work easier to plan.

  • Ask apartment, condo or HOA management about moving hours, elevator bookings, loading areas and insurance documentation they require.
  • Arrange gate codes, entry fobs and a reachable on-site contact. Check who can release the elevator or unlock the loading area.
  • Confirm permitted parking with the property manager or applicable authority. Avoid assuming a moving truck can block a lane, sidewalk or fire access.
  • Have keys and permission to enter the destination before scheduling the unload. Tell your mover about closing or lease timing that may delay access.

4. A few days before: finish the packing decisions

Choose what you will pack and what the crew will handle. Our packing service page and DIY packing tips explain box sizes, fragile-item preparation, labeling and furniture hardware.

  • Label boxes with the destination room, a brief contents list and a box number on the top and two sides. Use the same room names at the new home.
  • Pack dense items in smaller cartons and light items in larger cartons. Seal boxes so they close flat and can be handled securely.
  • Keep important documents, medication, valuables, keys and immediate essentials separate from the shipment.
  • Discuss drawers, detachable shelves and furniture disassembly with the crew. Put hardware in labeled bags inside an accessible parts box.
  • Separate propane, fuel, corrosive cleaners and other potentially hazardous items for an appropriate handling plan. Check Brevard County Solid Waste resources for disposal guidance and current facility rules.

5. Make a weather and household plan

Watch the local forecast and keep boxes and furniture dry before wrapping or loading. For thunderstorms, follow National Weather Service lightning guidance: seek a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle when thunder is heard. A covered porch or open truck body is not the same as safe indoor shelter.

Discuss weather interruptions with your mover rather than relying on a tight, inflexible schedule. Keep drinking water accessible, manage heat exposure, and plan a quiet place for children and pets away from active lifting routes. Tell the crew about loose rugs, wet steps or other access concerns.

6. Move day: use a short walkthrough

Before the first item is carried, walk through the agreed work with the crew lead. Show what moves, what stays, fragile pieces, pre-existing marks you want noted, room labels and any priority items. Confirm the scope, timing and payment details in your agreement.

Keep doorways and routes clear. Stay reachable for questions, and communicate changes before extra work begins. Before leaving pickup, check closets, cabinets, bathrooms, patios, the garage and storage areas for overlooked belongings.

7. Unload with a room plan

Put destination-room signs where the crew can see them and use a simple furniture placement plan. Decide on large furniture positions before boxes fill the room. Identify the hardware box and any assembly priorities agreed in your service scope.

During the final walkthrough, check placement, confirm agreed work is complete and point out any concerns. Keep your final documents and report damage concerns promptly through the procedure in your agreement.
