Moving Truck and Travel Charges Explained for Local Moves

A local moving estimate can include an hourly crew rate and a separate truck and travel charge. Understanding each line helps you compare estimates and plan the total cost of your move in Palm Bay, Melbourne, or another Brevard County community.

The written estimate for your actual addresses and service is the place to confirm the amount. Different companies can use different charging methods.

What does a truck and travel charge cover?

For our movers-with-truck service, this charge accounts for the truck and crew traveling to the first service address and returning to our warehouse after the job. It is separate from the agreed hourly work at your addresses.

Two homes only a few miles apart can still have a truck and travel charge because the crew must reach the first home and return after unloading. The distance between pickup and delivery is only part of the route.

How our minimum works

Florida’s Reliable Moving Services uses a minimum truck and travel charge equivalent to one hour at the quoted crew rate for movers-with-truck jobs. If the combined drive to the first address and back from the final address exceeds 50 minutes, the travel allowance may increase, rounded up to the next 15-minute increment. Review the specific charge in your estimate before booking.

The calculation depends on the service route and quoted crew. A labor-only appointment has its own terms because you arrange the transportation equipment separately.

How is travel different from hourly moving labor?

Hourly moving work covers the agreed tasks, such as the arrival walk-through, furniture protection, loading, unloading, and any included assembly work. For our hourly service, billing starts on arrival for the walk-through and stops after unloading and completion of the agreed work, subject to the minimum and charges in your agreement. Additional billable time is calculated in 15-minute increments.

Ask how driving between service addresses, extra stops, and waiting for access are treated in your estimate. Confirming those details is more useful than assuming every company includes them in the same line item.

What should you compare between estimates?

  • The number of movers and whether a truck is included.
  • The hourly rate and minimum billable hours.
  • The truck and travel charge and what route it covers.
  • How time between addresses, waiting, and extra stops is billed.
  • Materials, packing, specialty items, and other agreed charges.
  • The billing increment after the minimum.

A lower hourly rate alone does not tell you which estimate has the lower total. Compare the same inventory, access conditions, and services.

Help us prepare the right travel estimate

Provide complete addresses and every planned stop, including storage units. Tell us about gate access, elevator reservations, parking limits, and any date or route changes. An address change can affect both travel and the time spent carrying items.

If you are unsure about a line item, ask our office to explain it before approving the estimate. For related answers, visit our moving FAQs and service policies.
